During the Coronavirus pandemic, we have heard nearly no good news except the healing of our ozone layer.
Recently, there is a drastic recovery in the hole of the Ozone layer after the agreement of Montreal Protocol(1980). This is one of the positive news during the Coronavirus pandemic. The reason behind this recovery is not clear yet. Some scientists are saying that this is due to less production of ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances) and carbon dioxide. But, some scientists say this is a temporary fix in the ozone hole which may be due to the usual mild temperature in the atmosphere of the ozone layer.
'The study adds to growing evidence showing profound effectiveness of the Montreal Protocol. NOt only has the treaty spurred healing of the ozone layer, but it's also driving recent changes in Southern Hemisphere air circulation patterns.
The challenges in this study were proving our hypothesis that ozone recovery is, in fact, driving these atmospheric circulation changes and it isn't just a coincidence,'
said lead author Antara Banerjee, a CIRES Visiting Fellow at the University of Colorado Boulder who works in the Chemical Sciences Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA).
There worrying changes occurring in Southern Hemisphere which were leading to the jet streams.
Ian Rae (Organic Chemist from the University of Melbourne) says,'The weather bands that bring out cold fronts have been narrowing towards the south pole, and that's why southern Australia has experienced decreasing rainfall over the last thirty years or so. If the ozone layer is recovering, and the circulation is moving north, that's good news on two fronts (pun not intended)''.
According to researchers, if conditions are constant, our ozone layer would recover by 2030s in the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes and 2050s for the Southern Hemisphere mid-latitudes. While the Antarctic ozone hole would take around a decade longer than Southern Hemisphere mid-latitude, which is in the 2060s.
